STLNOMA is a non-profit chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA), established to provide networking opportunities for architectural professionals in the St. Louis community. With a rich history dating back to 1971, when twelve African-American architects recognized the need for an organization dedicated to the development and advancement of minority architects, STLNOMA now boasts 36 chapters and over 3,000 members internationally. The organization’s mission is to promote diversity within the design professions by fostering excellence, community engagement, and professional development among its members.
STLNOMA’s objectives include fostering communication and fellowship among minority architects, fighting discrimination in design and construction, and promoting the highest quality of living, working, and recreational environments. The organization also aims to maintain relationships with professionals and technicians impacting the physical and social environment, encourage joint venture relationships, and advocate for minority youth in the field of architecture. With a dedicated leadership team led by President Melisa Sanders of BlackArc Design, STLNOMA is committed to championing diversity and excellence in the architectural industry.
Through its various initiatives, STLNOMA provides mentorship opportunities for working professionals and architecture students, as well as guidance for individuals exploring careers in architecture. By working closely with local, state, and national governments on issues affecting neighborhood development and community growth, STLNOMA serves as a vital source of motivation and inspiration for minority architects and aspiring professionals in the field. With a focus on professional development and community engagement, STLNOMA continues to make a significant impact on the architectural landscape in St. Louis and beyond.
